Benaojan
The cave of La Pileta is
situated at 670 m of altitude in the south slope of the boulder of Las
Mesas
, a rocky
hill located between the mountain range of El Palo and the mountain range of Juan Diego,
which runs pararell to the Guadiaro river, fifting its bed to the south of Benaojan.
One accede to the place by the highway
MA-8401, that 4,5 km from Benaojan in the direction to Cortes de la Frontera has a
desviation towards an esplanade where to park the vehicles. From there you ascend on a
stone stair-way
to the entrance of the Cave.
It is also possible to arrive by train until the stations of Benaojan - Montejaque or
Jimera de Líbar, but there are no public transports from the train station to La
Pileta.
The surrounding of the
Cave are a powerful grayish white limestone massif, profiled on a max. of altitude of
1.400 m and that constitues the Málaga part of the
Natural Park Sierra of Grazalema
From the vantage point in where the Cave is, you enjoy excellentes
views, a rough land underlining the singular plain that opens to our feet down hillside:
the valley of the Cave. We are in the rock domain, lack of all vegetation except species
that grows in its fissures along with some bushes and trees that occupies the slight
available ground. The formation with karstic origin abounds and the limestone is, it if
has been occupied by water, dangerously sharpened.
A varied fauna gives life to this
beautiful space, a paradise for the numerous wild goats
, birds, mammals and reptiles.
